| Working Statement By cobbling together parts of landscapes and figures, I explore the fantasy that tempers our engagement with the world. This relationship with place is affected by cycles of expectation, experience, and memory. Physically, forms and spaces are broken into parts and meaning arrives in the process of reconstruction. Utilizing a mixture of painterly approaches, imagery is gleaned from travel memorabilia as well as from the circus and theater. Printed ephemera such as postcards and brochures are sourced as souvenirs of voyages past, present, or future. Film, theater, and the circus inform this work as each propels ideas and fantasies of places unknown or seemingly unattainable. These fragments come together through the painted mark on canvas or wall installations as well as cut from paper in the form of collage. |
